George W. Dewey, 95, Massena. Mr. George W. Dewey, 95, formerly of Maple Street Road, peacefully passed away on Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2009 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since September 2000.

George was born March 1, 1914 in Louisville, the son of the late Almon and Sarah Benson Dewey. He graduated from Massena High School in 1933. He married Gwendolyn B. McCleave on June 20, 1939 at her home in Massena with Rev. Barber Walters, officiating. She predeceased him on August 25, 1992.

George served his sheet metal apprenticeship at Alcoa and later worked there for 9 years before beginning his own plumbing and sheet metal business, Dewey’s Plumbing, Heating, and Sheet Metal Work. In 1944, he was a civilian employee in Bremerton Naval Yards in Washington, leaving in 1945. He also worked as a civilian employee at the Puget Sound Naval Yards in Washington. George was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons #513, the Massena Grange #704, and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed repairing antique clocks, hunting, canoeing, camping, his tools and his shop. He was avid bowler, belonging to the “Merchants League”. He was member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee and wound the clock for many years there.

He is survived by his four children and their spouses, James and Cecelia Dewey, Louisville, Walter and Marlene Dewey, Louisville, Linda Dewey, Ilion, and Laura and Gregory Fregoe, Massena; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Johnson, Norwood, Elizabeth Elliott, Ohio, and Hope and Robert Griffiths, Voorheesville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Susan Nichols on October 14, 2001.

Friends may call Saturday 11:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena where funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena.
