Dewey P. Pierce, 65, West Potsdam. Dewey P. Pierce, 65, of West Potsdam, died Oct. 26, 2009 at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse.

A fireman’s funeral will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, Canton, where West Potsdam Fire Department Honor Guard will stand. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Canton.

Surviving are his significant other, “Ardie” Richardson of West Posdam; his children, Robert B. Pierce and wife Jennifer of Potsdam, Deborah B. Murray and husband Don of Norwood, and Amy M. Murphy and husband Shane of Canton; two step-children, Lori Richardson of Charleston, SC and Mark Richardson and wife Michelle of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Sheila Friedel and husband Bruce of Potsdam; eight grandchildren, Kathryn “Katie” and Justin Pierce of Potsdam, Jessica and Brandon Murray of Norwood, Cory Dashno and wife Jacklyn of NC and Brooke Dashno of Canton and Abby and Zach Richardson of Boston, MA; and one great-grandson, Hunter Dashno.

Born March 28, 1944 in Potsdam, he was the son of Benjamin and Marjorie (Spears) Pierce. He graduated from Potsdam High School where he was a member of the track team.

On July 17, 1964 he married Helen Smith at Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Cal Zimmer as celebrant. The marriage ended in divorce.

Mr. Pierce worked on the family farm until the farm was sold in 1988. He later raised sheep and worked at other area farms.

He was an active member of the West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department since 1975 where he was always willing to serve.

Mr. Pierce was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as trapping and camping. He also played softball and was an avid bowler.
