Gerald T. Barnes, 72, Hogansburg. Mr. Gerald T. Barnes, 72, of 46 Cree Road, passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening October 26, 2009 at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT.
He was born April 6, 1937 in Hogansburg, the son of Fred and Louise Cook Barnes. He attended St. Regis Mohawk School from 1943 until 1951 and from 1952 -1954, he attended Bombay High School and later received his GED. Gerald served in the US Army from August 1955, having served overseas until his discharge in December 1958. He served in the US Army Reserves, Massena Detachment from 1978 until 1986. He married Grace E. Gaspe on September 2, 1961 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, SJ. officiating.
Gerald was a supervisor for the New York State Department of Transportation for 33 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he went to work part-time for the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens for 7 years.
He was a member of the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department from 1973 until he resigned in 1982 due to ill health. While a member of the department, he once served as both President and Vice President. He was also a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, and a former member of the Moose Lodge.
He enjoyed woodworking, flower gardening, and was avid reader. He loved to travel, having made many trips over the past 10 years. He also enjoyed spending time in his pool, being with his family and taking walks.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; three children, Kim Russell and her husband, Nicholas, Fort Covington, Shelly King and her husband, George, St. Regis, Quebec and Troy Barnes and his wife, Patricia, Fort Covington; six grandchildren, Shane, Joseph, Tiffany, Cailey, Clair, and Caroline; one great granddaughter, Anna; three sisters, Josephine Mitchell, St. Regis, Quebec, Marsha Barnes, Hogansburg and Louise Lazore and her husband Jack, Snye, Quebec; a brother, Darryl Barnes and his wife, Erica, Hogansburg; a godson, Nolan Jacobs, Hogansburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Louise Barnes during World War II, and a sister Rita A. Jacobs on January 17, 2002.
Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 a.m. at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
