Mrs. Verna M. Loran, “Kwatarani”, 75, of 306 State Highway 37, unexpectedly passed away Tuesday evening, June 11, 2013 in the emergency room at Massena Memorial Hospital.
Verna was born June 21, 1937 in Cornwall, Ontario, the daughter of the late Mitchell and Agatha Mitchell Peters. She attended schools on Cornwall Island. On July 21, 1956, she married Bernard Loran at the Racquette River Methodist Parsonage with Rev. Fred Bailey, officiating. He predeceased her on May 23, 2004.
Verna once worked as a seamstress at the Bombay Slipper Factory and at the Levi Company in Cornwall. She was a member of the Hogansburg Methodist Church, the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post 1479 Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society. She loved being outdoors working on her flowers and lawn, walking, and her “Sunday Drives”.
She is survived by her six children, Bernie Jr. and Holly Loran, Lisa and Matt Jacobs, Dawn Loran, Francine Chubb and her companion, Rob Green, Aaron “Ace” and Karen Loran, and Michael Loran, all of Akwesasne; 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; her brother, Richard Peters of Akwesasne; and her sister, Shirley Jacobs of Akwesasne.
Verna is also survived by her chosen sisters, Marlene Garrow and Maryella Chubb; two god children, Robert Roundpoint and Sean Gambill; her in-laws, Connie and Billy Sunday, Irene Gambill and her companion, Nelson Sawatis, Marienne Loran, Venita Loran, and Carl Cook, all of Akwesasne; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by two children, Tracy Loran on March 11, 1960, and Lois Ann Benedict on June 10, 1982; a grandson, Landon Loran Cook on January 28, 1986; 10 siblings including, Theresa Sunday, Elizabeth “Betty” Laughing, and Benny Roundpoint; and her in-laws, Esther Loran, Jeanette Cook, Daniel Loran, Sanford Loran, and Ella Peters.
Friend may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers beginning Thursday 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Funeral services will be held Saturday 11:00 a.m. at the Hogansburg Methodist Church with Rev. Sheila Nichols, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Meadow Cemetery, Akwesasne.
