LOUSIVILLE -- Thomas F. Geagan, 76, of River Drive, passed away peacefully on Sunday February 4, 2018 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena.
Tom was born on August 23, 1941, to the late Margaret (Brennan) Geagan in Baldwin, NY. He graduated from Chaminade High School and later obtained a B.S. from Adelphi University and then a M.S. from SUNY Cortland.
Tom began teaching physical education in Port Jefferson Station on Long Island where he met and then married the third grade teacher, Sandy D’Arienzo, on August 13, 1966, in Sacred Heart Church, Massena. After teaching on Long Island for three years, Tom and Sandy moved to Massena, then Brasher Falls, where he taught swimming at St. Lawrence Central for thirty years. While teaching there he touched countless lives and coached in minor hockey, high school football and lacrosse. He was the impetus for starting lacrosse in Section 10, he also coached lacrosse at St. Lawrence University for three years. Being a great sports fan, the family feels it is very significant that he passed on Super Bowl Sunday.
During their summers the family enjoyed going to Cape Cod, eventually buying a house that Tom diligently restored. After retiring in 1997, Tom enjoyed travelling to Europe and the islands with family and friends several times. In recent years travel centered on visiting sons, daughters in-law, and beloved grandchildren.
Religion was very important to Tom as you could often find him at daily Mass. He was a lector and member of the Sacred Heart-St. Lawrence Parish Council. He was also a member of the Louisville Planning Board and Charter member of the St. Lawrence Central Hall of Fame Committee. Tom was often seen working his beautiful Samoyed Huskies as the love of his dogs brought him peace.
Tom is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandy; their sons, Tom and fiancée Janet Engle of Washington Depot, CT and Peter and Kate Geagan of Hailey, ID. He will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Claire, Rachel, Georgia and Chase. Tom is also survived by his sister Helen Ann Geagan C.S.J. of Brentwood, NY, and his mother in-law, Betty D’Arienzo of Massena. Also brother in-law Matty and Cindy D’Arienzo and sister in-law, Debbie and Chuck Patten, several nieces, a nephew, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret, brothers Jim and Bob, and nephew Tom.
The Geagan family will be holding calling hours, a funeral Mass, and a Celebration of life in June at the convenience of the family members.
