Thom Cartmill, 88, of Davidson NC passed away at home on July 14, 2010.
Born June 15, 1922 in Glen Ridge NJ he was the son of the late Vaneta A. and William J. Cartmill. He attended Cornell University and graduated from Springfield College, later receiving his master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Thom was a distinguished Athletics Administrator and successful coach, retiring from Davidson College in 1985 having served as Director of Athletics and golf coach. Prior to coming to Davidson in 1974, he was Director of Athletics at St Lawrence University in Canton. He also coached basketball, tennis, football and soccer at Union College, Schenectady and Friends School Baltimore, MD. He served on numerous NCAA and Southern Conference Committee during his career.
Thom was an avid tennis player and loved playing golf, landscaping his yard, tending his rose gardens and spending time in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater. He saw action in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and helped construct the Pontoon Bridge at Remagen, the allies first crossing of the Rhine River.
Mr. Cartmill is survived by his two sons and their wives, Lee and Debbie of Ithaca and Mark and Lori of Berea KY; six grandchildren, Kevin, Joshua, Christopher, Sarah, Erin and Connor and three great-grandsons, Nicholas, Zachary and Noah. He is also survived by his dear close friend, Hope Bell.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in 1999 by his wife, Ruth, the love and light of his life.
Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of his family.
