OGDENSBURG -- A Funeral Mass for Shirley E. Smith, age 98, will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cathedral at a time to be announced.
Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring.
Mrs. Smith passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Riverledge Heathcare Facility.
Surviving are her children, David Smith of LosMolino’s CA, Richard (Gale) Smith of Baldwinsville, NY, Judith (Dean) Potts of Victor, NY and Mary Ann (John) Leo of Liverpool; and nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Smith; a sister, Geraldine Short; a brother, Jack Spooner; and a great-granddaughter, Kathleen O’Reilly.
Shirley was born on May 21, 1918 in Ogdensburg, a daughter of the late Henry & Olla (Nevin) Spooner. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and later married Herbert A. Smith on August 28, 1937 at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Msgr. Berube officiating.
During her career she worked at Bell Telephone in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence State Hospital and later did child care in her home for many years.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral parish and the altar & rosary society.
Shirley enjoyed conversations with others and babysitting area children.
She touched many lives and was a great comfort to those in need.
