Sheila M. Guertin, 78, Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG -- Funeral services for Sheila M. Guertin, age 78, will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date in the Spring. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Mrs. Guertin passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Sheila is survived by her husband, Robert; her children, Kelly Gonyea and her husband, Kenneth, of Lisbon, Kurt Guertin and his wife, Carol, of Covington, GA and Kara Lawton and her husband, Jeffory, Ogdensburg; seven grandchildren, Korey Francis and his wife, Holly, Nicole Lowe and her husband, William, Kingston Guertin, Sara Lawton and her companion, Robert Williams, Mollie Lawton and her companion, Travis Robertson, Tucker Lawton and Austin Lawton; four great grandchildren, Sophia Francis, Drake Francis, Joshua Lowe and Liam Lowe; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Theodore, Ronald, Donald and Timothy Murphy; and her dog, Reload.

Sheila was born on November 13, 1939, in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Lawrence and Hattie Mashaw Murphy. She attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1958.

Sheila married Robert Guertin on September 22, 1961, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, in Ogdensburg, with Rev. A.D. Charbonneau officiating. Later, Sheila and her husband moved to Prescott, Ontario in 1963 and moved back to Ogdensburg in 1967.

Sheila worked for Hepburn Pharmacy in high school and then went on to be employed by Woolworth’s as a cashier and later Loblaw’s as head cashier. Loblaw’s was then bought out by Great American where Sheila continued to be employed until the company closed. Mrs. Guertin, at the age of 55, decided to further her education at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario in the Cosmetology Program. Sheila worked at Hair Express with her daughter, Kelly, in Ogdensburg, where she remained until her retirement.

Sheila enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping, boating, four wheeling, snowmobiling and woodchuck hunting. Sheila was also an excellent marks man and enjoyed target shooting. Mrs. Guertin was also a member of the UFCW Local 1 Meat Cutters Union where she held the position of Union Steward.
