Ronald J. McLennan, 76, of Alexandria Bay, and formerly of Ogdensburg, passed away Tuesday, June 21, at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
Born Sept. 22, 1934, in Ogdensburg, a son of George and Glendora Hedden McLennan, he graduated from Norwood High School, and then Potsdam State and St. Lawrence University.
He married Nancy Leonhardt on June 30, 1957.
In July 1957, he entered the Army. He served in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1959.
In September 1959, he was hired to teach junior high science in Alexandria Central School. In 1965, at the age of 31, he became superintendent of schools and served until he retired on July 1, 1992.
Mr. McLennan was very active in many aspects of the Alexandria community. He was president of the board of directors for the former E. J. Noble Hospital as well as for the former Holland Library. He also served on the NYS Ethics committee for school superintendents. His contributions to other local superintendents and BOCES were well regarded. He was a fine educator.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy; two children, Stanley G. McLennan and wife, Joyce, Windsor Locks, Conn., and Carolyn McLennan, New York City; a grandson, Bryan McLennan, Windsor Locks, Conn.; three brothers, Don and wife, Carolee, Darrell, and Walter and wife, Kay McLennan; a sister, Myrna and her husband, Robert Robinson.
Calling hours will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at Costello Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, with Rev. Robert Vrooman officiating.
