Funeral services for Robert J. Sloan, age 76 of Heuvelton will be Monday, July 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fox and Murray Funeral Home with Bill Rupp officiating. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Heuvelton.
Calling hours will be Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Sloan died at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center on Thursday evening surrounded by his loving family.
Surviving is his longtime companion of 30 years, Nora Butterfield of Heuvelton; a son Gregory Sloan and his wife Ann of Ogdensburg; a daughter Suzanne Noble and her husband Bryan of Canton; a sister, Helen Porteous and her husband William of Chipman; four grandchildren, Alison and Bryan Noble and Sara and Jon Sloan.
Bob was born on April 26, 1938 in Heuvelton, a son of the late Ralph and Isabelle (Merkley) Sloan. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School and married Shirley Thompson, which later ended in divorce.
During his career, he worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway as a laborer, at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a plumber and in 1965, began Robert Sloan Construction, which was later renamed to Robert and Greg Sloan Construction when his son joined the business. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, four-wheeling and going to camp. He was a past charter member of the Heuvelton Lions Club and a member of the Quebec Brook Hunting Club.
