Rebecca “Becky” Bowman, 79, of Fairlane Drive, Canton died Sunday, June 27 in Mechanicsburg, PA.
She is survived by her husband, Maynard L. Bowman; two daughters, Nancy Boyer of Conway, NH and Mary Popovich of Skaneateles; a son and daughter in law, Michael and Jean Bowman of Mechanicsburg, PA; a brother, John Oliver III of Ft. Myers, FL; and seven grandchildren, two nieces and three nephews.
Rebecca was born in Mt. Holly, NJ, the daughter of John and Dorothy Watson Oliver. She graduated from Canton Central School in 1948, from St. Lawrence University in 1952 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and from Potsdam State College in 1958 with a Master’s Degree in Education. She had been a Kindergarten and First Grade teacher on Long Island, in Lockport, and Potsdam, retiring from there in 1987.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowman were married July 3, 1954 at Gunnison Chapel on the campus of St. Lawrence University.
Becky was a member of the NY Teachers Association, the Canton Garden Club, the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, Heritage Ridge Golf Club, and the E.J. Noble Hospital Guild. The football field at Canton Central School is named for her father, John Oliver. She was an avid gardener and golfer.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, June 30 at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Catanzaro officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Fairview Cemetery.
