Priscilla C. Martin, “Skonwaie:ron,” 77, Akwesasne. Mrs. Priscilla C. Martin, “Skonwaie:ron”, 36 Phillip Hopps Road, passed away Thursday evening, August 19, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, where she had been a patient since Sunday. She had been in failing health for the past 2 years.
Priscilla was born December 30, 1932, in Cornwall, the daughter of Louie and Elizabeth Hall George. She attended schools in St. Regis Village. On February 14, 1953, she married Alexander Martin in Jamaica. He predeceased her in December 1983.
She was a seamstress, working for many years in Malone, Cornwall, and most recently out of her home. She was a life member of the American Legion Post #1479 Ladies Auxiliary, where she was also a past officer. She enjoyed cooking and was an extraordinary gardener.
Priscilla also played an instrumental role on the volunteer committee that established what has come to be known as the “Akwesasne International Pow Wow.”
She was also an avid Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed spending time with her grand and great grandchildren.
Priscilla is survived by her four children, Victor Martin of Cornwall Island, Geraldine Gray of Akwesasne, Kallen Martin of Syracuse, and Sally Martin of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Patrick, Lindsay, and Abraham Gray; seven great-grandchildren, Gavin, Ava, Isaac, Angelina, Isiah, Coloney, Raun, and Jr.;and many cousins.
She was predeceased by an infant grandson, Jacob Payment on November 21, 1994; and an infant brother at birth.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Saturday 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Chuch with Rev. Martin A. Cline, celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hogansburg.
