Mr. Paul M. Eggleston, 83, of 236 East Hatfield St. passed away early Tuesday morning at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted on Friday. He had been in failing health since July.
Paul was born December 27, 1926 in Massena, the son of the late Millard and Jennie E. LaHare Eggleston. He first attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Massena High School. He served in the US Army as a Military Police Officer from January 1945 until December 1946. On May 13, 1950, he married Rita M. Singleton at the Church of the Sacred Heart.
Paul first worked for Matty D’Arienzo as a mechanic and body and fender repair, before going to Fournier Buick in Ogdensburg. He later went to work for the Buick garage in Massena before opening his own shop, P & E Body Shop in Brasher, of which he operated from 1958 until 1972. In August of 1972, he went to work at Alcoa as a general mechanic and continued there until his retirement in January 1990.
He was a lifetime member of the Earl J. Santimaw VFW Post #1143, the Gerald R. Roy AMVETS Post #4, and the American Legion Post #514, Winthrop. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1702, Massena and a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Massena. Among Paul’s many enjoyments, were golfing, playing cards, fishing, hunting, camping, and wood working. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, reading, playing computer games, telling a good story or joke. He and his wife enjoyed many 20 winters in Palmetto, Florida, where they enjoyed biking. In addition, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rita; four children, Michael Eggleston and his wife, Marcia, Lynn Trippany and her husband, Gary, Bruce Eggleston and Cynthia and Mark Meldrum, all of Massena; seven grandchildren, Cherie Eggleston and Mark LaDuke, Chris and Julie Eggleston, Jon Eggleston, Patrick and Jennifer Trippany, Kristy Trippany, Andy and Kelli Trippany, and Chelsea Meldrum; seven great grandchildren, Devin Page, Autumn and Thomas Eggleston, Patrick, Matthew, and Sarah Trippany, and Zachary Trippany; a niece, Meredith Price and her husband, Richard of Ridgewood, NJ; and a nephew, Robin Leafe of Massena.
He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis A. Leafe on November 14, 1993.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. J. Michael Gaffney, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
