MASSENA -- Paul J. Despaw, 89, formerly of Massena, passed away on January 9, 2017 at the Highland Nursing Home.
There will be no public calling hours or funeral services.
Interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery II, Norfolk in the spring.
Paul was born on September 20, 1927 in Massena, the son of the late Philo L. and Bessie O. (Shattuck) Despaw.
He attended Norfolk Schools and served in the US Army, stationed in Germany for two years.
When returning home, he worked at Wingdale State Facility in New York City for a couple of years and later went to work at the Norfolk Paper Mill for a short period, He then worked at ALCOA and later worked at GM as a laborer for 15 years, retiring in 1982.
He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed hunting, sports and playing in baseball leagues when he was younger.
He married Ruth Robinson in 1949, the marriage later ended in divorce.
Paul is survived by his children, Paul Despaw of Massena, James and wife, Rosemary Despaw of Rochester, Wendy and husband, Raymond Cloutier of Louisville and Donald Despaw of Massena; five grandchildren, Travis and wife, Lucy Lamberton of TX, Nicole Lamberton of Massena, James Despaw of Rochester, Jacklyn Despaw of Brasher and Jessica Despaw of Massena; four great grandchildren, Deagan Gilley of TX, Nickolas and Isabella Lamberton of Massena and Madison Sheets of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by five brothers and nine sisters.
Arrangements are under the care of Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.
