MASSENA -- Patrick J. Murphy, 55, known to close friends and family as James, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at his home.

Friends and family may be received Thursday, February 8, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. until time of services at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Mark R. Reilly officiating at Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.

A graveside burial will be held in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Louisville in the spring at the convenience of the family.

James was born on May 10, 1962, in Puyallup, Washington, the son of Patrick J. and Willa G. Murphy.

An army brat, his father was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington at the time of his birth.

His first school attended was at West Point USMA Elementary, later attending fourth grade in Kankakee, IL, while his father served a tour in Vietnam. His fifth, sixth and seventh grade was attended in Izmir, Turkey, while his Jr. High and Graduation was from West Springfield High School in Springfield, VA.

After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Quarter Master on the Supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) for four years.

After serving his country proudly in the Navy he moved to Massena, where he assisted his parents in the operation of Murphy’s Celtic Inn while attending Canton ATC.

The bar closed in 1996 and he went to work for NYSARC until medically retired in 2017.

His much loved hobbies and vocation were music and cooking.

He is survived by his parents, Patrick J. and Willa G. Murphy of Massena; a sister, Loreen Murphy of Norwood; nieces, Megan and Bonnie Anderson of Virginia; a brother, Bryan K. and his wife, Tricia F. Murphy, and their son, Sean M. of Massena; an Aunt, Mary K. Davis; and cousins, Ed and Marty Johnston and Robin Taylor, along with other aunts, uncles, and cousins in Illinois, New York and Ohio.
