HANNAWA FALLS -- Nancy J. (Holmes) Hughes, 84, formerly of Madrid, passed away Friday afternoon, December 29, 2017 at the University of Vermont Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Madrid with Rev. Doug Lucia presiding. Interment will be held in the Madrid Cemetery at the convenience of the family in the spring.
Nancy was born on May 21, 1933 in Penn Yan, NY, the daughter of G. Lloyd and Hilda (Wilson) Holmes. After graduating from Madrid High School, Nancy worked at her father's business, Holmes Grocery, then Niagara Mohawk. Nancy married Joseph Hughes on Aug. 29, 1957 at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Dewey presiding. She raised her family, and later owned and operated Holmes Grocery in Madrid along with her husband for many years. Joseph predeceased her on May 20, 2014.
Nancy was very active with the Madrid American Legion Auxiliary Post #1513, holding the position of Secretary/Treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Seaway Valley Senior Citizens, and St. John's Altar & Rosary Society.
Nancy is survived by a son, Mark Hughes and his wife Heather of Hannawa Falls; daughters, Linda and her husband Richard LePage of Massena, Connie and her husband Tim O'Brien of Niskayuna, and Patty and her husband Dickie Ogden of Gansevoort. Also surviving Nancy are seven grandchildren, Chris, Emily, Joe, Ian, Hannah, Brodey and Carson; along with several nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her sister, Ann Hughes.
