Miles D. Smith, 46, Massena

Mr. Miles D. “Howie” Smith, 46, of 900 North Racquette River Road, peacefully passed away Thursday morning, July 19, with his loving mother at his side at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, where he had been a patient since July 7th.

Miles was born May 29, 1966 in Massena, the son of Elizabeth Disheau Smith and the late Harold D. Smith. He attended and graduated from Massena Central Schools in 1985.

He worked for a short time delivery parts for Holcomb’s Auto in Massena and later for Dan Hamilton, until becoming disabled. Despite his disability and illnesses, Miles had a zest for life and truly loved being outdoors and enjoying all he could. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, watching the birds, and working on his pride and joy, his tractor. Miles also loved the good times spent on “The Lot” and at his cabin in the woods. He was also an animal lover, especially his beloved dogs. He was an honorary member of the Fourth Coast Rogues Motorcycle Club, who visited him often during his stays at the hospital.

Miles is survived by his loving and devoted mother, Elizabeth “Betty” of Massena; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Warren and Cathy Smith of Massena; Alan and Janet Smith and Scott and Tammy Smith, all of Chandler, Arizona. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Courtney Jo Knupp, Daniel, Justin, Savanna, Ryan, Mitchell, and Sahara Smith.

He was predeceased by his father, Harold on October 20, 2002.

Friends may call Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, until a service celebrating and memorializing his life at 2 p.m. with Revs. Heather Stierheim and James E. Barnes, II, officiating. Burial will be held privately in Massena Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or the Massena Humane Society.
