Mr. Michael R. Sweeney “Big Mike”, 60, of East Ave, passed away Monday morning, September 1, 2014 at Massena Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Big Mike was born January 29, 1954 in Massena, the son of Robert and Mildred Gardner Sweeney. He graduated from Massena High School.
After graduating from school, he started his working career in the pot rooms at ALCOA, where he remained until his retirement. He was a member of the Alcoa 25-year club, the Elks Lodge 1702 and the Massena Moose Lodge 1110. He was an avid Harley motorcyclist and enjoyed hunting and collecting various types of memorabilia and coins.
Mike is survived by his children, Ashlee Sweeney of Massena, and Jason Sweeney of Brooklyn; his mother, Mildred Sweeney of Massena; his sisters, Bobbi Jean and Irv Truitt of Florida, Patricia and Neil Crowley of Massena and Paula and Allen Barclay of Saratoga Springs; eight nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Patricia LaLonde Sweeney of Indiana.
He was predeceased by his father, Robert on June 3, 2004.
The family invites friends to celebrate Big Mike’s life on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena beginning at 11:00 a.m. with friends and family sharing memories and stories at 12:00 noon.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
The family wishes to extend the deepest and sincere gratitude and thanks to the nurses and aides in the ICU at Massena Memorial Hospital for the excellent care given to Mike in his final days.
