Melvin Elias Lerch, 90, died on Nov. 23, 2010 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Maplewood Campus, 205 State Street Canton, NY 13617.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Doris, Potsdam; his sister, Shirley Silva of Idaho; a son, Ken Lerch and daughter-in-law Lyn Lerch of California; a daughter, Elena Lerch of California; stepdaughter Connie and Dan Maguire; a stepson, Robert and Karen Cox all of Parishville; stepson Jerald and Kathe Cox, Tennessee; and grandchildren Stephen Lerch of California, Kelly and Danny Maguire, Lauren and Stephanie Cox, of Parishville, Travis, Troy, and Tanya Standley, of California.
Melvin was one of 13 children born to Ruben and Margaret Kephart Lerch in Oakdale, California on April 6, 1920. Melvin was a proud Navy veteran serving in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii during the attack by the Japanese where he lost many friends and comrades. He married and subsequently divorced Vivian Santa Cruz in Oakland, California. He married Doris Cox on April 6, 1985 in Canton.
Melvin enjoyed dancing, reading, and spending time with his family. He was also very active in the local senior citizen clubs. In 2007 he went to live in the Maplewood nursing home in Canton, where he was loved and well cared for.
Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam.
