Funeral services for Melvin A. Ashley, age 84, of State Highway 37, Ogdensburg, will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery following funeral services with military honors. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Frary Funeral Home on 515 Caroline Street. Mr. Ashley passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Edna; two daughters, Sharon Ashley of Manlius, and Janice Corrice and her husband, Alfred, of Port Leyden; two sons, Steven and his wife, Mona, of Brasher Falls and Bryan of Ogdensburg; one sister, Lorraine Hutt and her husband, Hector, of Orchard Park; seven grand children and nineteen great grandchildren .
He was predeceased by brothers, Gilbert, Ronald, Norman and Bernard; and a sister, Dorothy Rheome.
Melvin was born on March 8, 1929, in Ogdensburg, the son of William H. and Florence McNeil Ashley. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1948. Mr. Ashley married Edna Redmond on July 17, 1951 at Notre Dame Church with Rev. Gilbert J. Faucher officiating. Melvin joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged after serving for a period of time in Germany. Mr. Ashley first went to work as a paper boy, and then later worked at the old Strand Theater where he was head usher. Melvin also went on to work at A & P Grocery Store. He later retired from the Ogdensburg Fire Department after 29 years of service in 1986.
Mr. Ashley enjoyed fishing, cooking and antiques.
