North Gouverneur - Maysel O. Jones, 96, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 3rd at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with David Hart, pastor of the First Congregational Church and Presbyterian Stone Church, Ogdensburg and burial in Wayside Cemetery, Richville. Calling hours are Monday from 1:00 to 3:00 and 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
Maysel was born October 29, 1916 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Thomas and Ellen "Nellie" Putman Mills.
She attended local rural schools and graduated from Gouverneur High School.
Maysel married Charles D. Jones on June 1, 1939 at the Presbyterian manse in Gouverneur with Rev. Joseph A. Schofield, Jr. officiating. Charlie, a retired farmer and insurance agent, passed away December 14, 1998.
Maysel worked at Newberry's after graduation. She assisted her husband in operating a dairy farm on the Rock Island Road until 1961 and has lived in her home on the farm the past 75 years. Maysel also worked with her husband in his insurance office until the couple retired in 1982.
She had been a member of the North Gouverneur United Methodist Church, Depeyster Senior Citizens, and was a 65 year member of the Grange in Gouverneur and Macomb. Maysel enjoyed cooking, baking, ceramics, and bragging about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The couple also enjoyed their flower gardens and camping on the St. Lawrence River at Chippewa Bay.
Maysel is survived by a son Gerald and Joanne Jones of Blacksburg, VA, two daughters Sharon and Ned Druehl of Sonoma, CA, and Nancy Green of Gouverneur, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers James Mills and Murray Mills, and four sisters Margaretta Storrin, Mary Belle Hawn, Eleanor Gleason, and Doris Davis.
