Maurice D. Mahoney, 95, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Maurice was born on December 25, 1917 in the Town of Stockholm, son of the late Daniel and Helena (Parr) Mahoney. He graduated from Brasher Stockholm High School and entered the Army Air Force. Serving as a pilot/instructor, Maurice earned the rank of Lieutenant, as he taught new cadets the aeronautics of the B17. On August 10, 1944, he married Muriel “Jing” Cannon in Syracuse; sharing 68 years of a blessed, devoted union.
He worked for Marine Midland Bank in Rochester as a loan officer until his first retirement; he then operated his own dairy farm with registered Holsteins. After farming, the couple became caretakers for state parks from New York to South Dakota.
Maurice was a generous person; always helping others and the communities in which he lived. For St. Lawrence County, he was instrumental in assisting the Amish with their relocation and at one time was President of the Office of the Aging.
His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing and hunting; with his competitive side directing him to the game of baseball and later into card playing.
He is survived by his wife, “Jing” and their family pet, Bitsy; very close friends and neighbors. One brother, Charles Mahoney, predeceased him.
Following with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services at this time. Burial will be in Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop.
Maurice’s generosity was a help to all who received it, and his family requests that memorials or donations be given to the charity of your choice.
