Mary S. Byrnes, 84, passed away Monday (July 1, 2013) at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse with her family at her side. Funeral arrangements are with the Flint Funeral Home, Moira.

Mary was born October 14, 1928 in Brushton, the daughter of Dr. Philip & Francis (Rossworm) Stamatiades. She graduated from Brushton High School in 1945, and then continued her education at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1949. August 26th 1950, she was united in marriage to Mr. John “Jack” Byrnes, at St. Mary’s Church Brushton, with Rev. O’Brian officiating. While raising her family, she attended college at SUNY Potsdam, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Education, specializing in English.

Mary began her teaching career at St. Lawrence Central School teaching Regents English; retiring in 1987. During her time at St. Lawrence Central she acted as editor of the school yearbook for many years, winning many awards, including “Teacher of the Year”. In addition to her career as a school teacher, Mary taught Religious Education to the children of St. Mary’s parish, helping them prepare to receive Holy Communion. Mary was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader, especially historical books. One might say that she at times acted as the Village Historian; making it a point to be well versed on the history of the village that she called home for 84 years.

Her memories will be forever in the hearts of her husband, John; her children, Phyllis (Jeffrey) Gonyea of Brushton, and Philip (Helen) Byrnes of Cazenovia; her grandchildren, Michael (Catherine), Molly (Sean), Tim (Lindsey), Kate (Bradley), Erin, and Erica (John); and her great grandchildren, Sage, Jack, Finley, Lucy, and Olivia.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Alice and Phyllis; and a brother, Philip, who entered Gods Kingdom of Angels during his infancy.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s honor may be made to the Brushton Vol. Fire Dept, Moira Rescue Squad, St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Brushton, or the Brushton Moira American Legion Post 939.

Mary’s calling hours will be held Sunday (July 7, 2013) from 2-6 at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in her honor Monday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Christopher J. Looby presiding. Interment will commence in the parish cemetery.
