GOUVERNEUR – Mary K. Closs, 76, a lifetime resident of Gouverneur, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 under the care of her children and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Born on November 12, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Anna Frances (Fleming) Kenyon. Mary graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1955 and attended the State University of New York at Cortland.
On August 11, 1956, she married Carl R. Closs. Their marriage spanned 48 years, until his death on December 18, 2004.
Mary’s love of learning led to her work for over 30 years as a teacher’s aide at the West Side School in Gouverneur. She made meaningful connections with the students with whom she worked and was highly respected by staff members, as well as the children.
An avid contract bridge player, Mary enjoyed many years of afternoon and evening games with her friends. Other interests included reading, cooking, sewing, crossword puzzles, trips to casinos, and time spent with family.
Mary is survived by her four children, Kimberly Cassidy and John Klicki of Argyle, NY, Richard and Sabrina Closs of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Mark and Bobbi Jo Closs of Gouverneur, and Karla and Jeff Harpst of Oswego. She was the proud grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of four.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Green Funeral Home in Gouverneur between the hours of 6 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013. Services will be held on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 33 Park St in Gouverneur.
