Mary Ellen Carman, 73, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at Newark Wayne Community Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the Indian River Baptist Church, Philadelphia with Rev. Dan Klebes officiating and burial will be held at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Antwerp. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Mary Ellen was born August 8, 1940 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Alan and Margaret Hance Hillis. She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1958 and served in the United States Air Force. Mary Ellen worked at the American Process Co. in Watertown, for the Town of Antwerp, the Office of the Aging in Antwerp, and had sold Avon products for over 10 years.

Mary Ellen enjoyed hunting, playing cards, and visiting the casino. She thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Las Vegas, with her brothers, earlier this year. Mary Ellen was a member of the Indian River Baptist Church, Philadelphia Civic League, the ladies auxiliary of the Philadelphia Vol. Fire Department, and the auxiliary of the Philadelphia American Legion Post #798. She married Gilbert E. Carman on April 14, 1967. Mr. Carman passed away February 10, 2001.

Mary Ellen is survived by a son, Scott (Jackie) Carman of New York Mills; stepchildren Debbie (Gary) Russell of Phoenix, and Ricky (Melissa) Carman of Belfast; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kaileigh Carman, Clay and Chad Russell, Sonja Bailey, Ashly, Britney and Emalee Carman, and Philip McEathron; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Chuck (Marcia) Hillis of Palmyra, and Bob (Helen) Hillis of Sodus; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a sister, Sally Babcock.
