Margaret B. Rubar, 95, Edwards and Gouverneur

Margaret B. Rubar, 95, formerly of Trout Lake Road, Edwards, died Saturday, June 8, at Kinney Nursing Home, Gouverneur, where she had resided since January, 2006.

Born June 23, 1917, in Potsdam, she was the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Bryant Bullard. She was a graduate of Potsdam High School, and graduated from Potsdam Normal Teacher’s College with a degree in education. She later acquired her Master’s Degree in education and was working on her PhD.

She married James J. Rubar on July 20, 1940, at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam, with Monsignor Joseph Tierney, officiating. Mr. Rubar died on December 27, 2005.

Her teaching career began in Belfort, in the Town of Croghan, where she taught country school. She finished her career in the Gouverneur School system, teaching primary grades at Braise Corners and Richville before retiring in the 1970’s.

Mrs. Rubar was a former President of the Gouverneur Women’s Republican Club during the Eisenhower years in the 1950’s.

She was a communicant of St. James Church in Gouverneur, and was a member of the NYS Retired Teacher’s Association.

Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling, golf, reading, card playing, crossword puzzles, spending winters with her husband in Sun City West, Arizona, and especially spending time with her family.

Surviving are her three children, William H. Rubar, of Birmingham, Alabama, Kathleen R. and (husband) Paul DeLorme, of Winslow, Maine, and James J. and (wife) Jeanne Rubar, of Gouverneur; nine grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Bullard.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13, beginning with an 11: 15 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a noon funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery in Belfort.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the Prayer Service on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Fund, c/o St. James School, 20 South Gordon St., Gouverneur, NY 13642.
