Mrs. Josephine Marie Austin, 85, of 4 Judith Street, passed away on Monday afternoon, January 17, 2011 at the Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since January 14th. She had recently been a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home.
Josephine was born April 27, 1925 in Massena, the daughter of Pasquale “Patsy” and Catherine Trimboli Germano. She attended Massena schools. On February 15, 1947, she married Francis P. Austin at St. Mary’s Church, Massena with Rev. Donald Sequin, officiating.
Josephine was a manager for Wilson Dairies before becoming Homestead Dairies, retiring in 1987 after 32 years of service. She worked at the fountain at MH Fishman’s and Kinney Drug Store, where she met her husband. She was a communicant of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the bereavement committee and the League of the Sacred Heart. She was also a member of the Italian-American Civic Association Ladies Auxiliary, where she was a past president. Josephine also volunteered for Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She enjoyed camping, loved to read, and being around people.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Francis; five children, Anthony Austin and his wife, Maureen of Lakeland, Florida, David Austin of Rochester, Patrick Austin of Massena, Connie Farnan of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Robert Austin and his wife, Kaye of Roseboro, NC; her daughter-in-law, Kathy of Norwood; 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; her sister, Virginia Lawlor and her husband, John of Webster; her brother, Roy Germano and his wife, Margaret of Louisville, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
Josephine was predeceased by her son, Craig W. Austin on March 21, 2010; a brother, Anthony Germano in 1938; and two sisters, Julia G. “Rita” Hidy on February 25, 1999 and Margaret E. Portolese on September 7, 2003.
Josephine donated her body to medical research at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. A memorial mass will be held Saturday 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. J. Michael Gaffney, celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
