JoAnn Leatherland. 65, 190 Fregoe Road, passed away early this morning, Saturday, November 3, 2012 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She had been fighting cancer the past seven months.
JoAnn was born April 4, 1947, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, the daughter of Rev. W.M. and Emma Elizabeth Geiman Hoard. She graduated from Edgewood High School, Maryland, in 1965. She married William Earl Leatherland on July 2, 1966, at Edgewood Assembly of God Church, with her father Rev. W.M. Hoard officiating.
JoAnn came to Massena to live in 1977. She worked for a while at the Massena Observer, then as School Lunch Secretary for Massena Central School for 22 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #79.
She loved her grandchildren dearly and truly enjoyed watching Clarkson Hockey. She also took pleasure watching repeat episodes of Andy Griffith, sitting on her side porch to watch the river, and mowing her very large lawn.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, Earl and two children, Tammy Lee and David Leatherland-Alexander of Petersburg, VA, and Earl and Kendra Leatherland Jr. of Buffalo, NY; six grandchildren, Kirsten, Solomon, Cole, Daelyn, Adelyn, and Sekai; one sister, Patricia and Carl Pippin of Prince George, VA, and a brother-in-law and wife, Bernie and Louise Leatherland of Massena.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home Tuesday, 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. David L. Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at the Massena Center Cemetery.
