Mrs. Jean Brothers Fregoe, 92, of 1817 State Route 95, formerly of Massena, peacefully passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2013 at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the North Country.
Jean was born October 27, 1920 in Louisville Landing, the daughter of the late John and Carrie Fincham Weegar. She graduated from Massena High School and achieved her certificate in Geriatric Training from New York State. On June 14, 1939, she married Cecil B. Brothers at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Louisville; he predeceased her on November 4, 1979. Jean later married Donald F. Fregoe on June 16, 1989 at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Terry LaValley, officiating. Don predeceased her on March 13, 2003.
Jean worked in home care for many years, first doing private duty before going to work for the Department of Social Services where she retired in 1980. She was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and a former member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed traveling, reading, knitting, and playing bingo when she was younger. Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother, who enjoyed spending time with each of them.
She is survived by her five daughters, Nancy and Richard Tessier of Belleville, Ontario, Carolyn and Tom Cunningham of Wilson, NC, Martha and Pat McDonald of Massena, Joan and Keith Ramsdell of Nicholville and Kathy and Kevin Mayville of Bombay; 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her two sons, Robert B. Brothers on December 3, 1972 and Richard J. Brothers on February 13, 1991; and her two sisters, Mary Honeycut and Clara Ducolon.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
