Mrs. Jane E. Hazel, 85, formerly of 6 East Ave, passed away early Sunday morning, May 23, 2010, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since May 17th. She had been a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home for the past year.
Jane was born September 24, 1924 in Massena, the daughter of Charles L. and Florence Mae Riley Simser. She was a graduate of Massena High School. On October 24, 1942, she married Murland B. Hazel at St. John’s Episcopal Rectory with Rev. Godfrey, officiating. Mr. Hazel predeceased her on February 19, 1986.
Jane was a homemaker raising her two daughters. She also operated a ceramic shop out of her home for a short time. She greatly enjoyed watching baseball, football, hockey and any of her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was an avid bowler, having bowled on several leagues. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren.
Jane is survived by her two daughters, Ginny Sommerfield and her husband, Kenneth of North Syracuse and Kathy Martin of Louisville; five grandchildren, Darcy LaCombe, Sean and Shannon Derouchie, and Van Alexander all of Massena and Chad Alexander of Fort Covington; nine great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Paul Martin of July 14, 2008; her brother, Robert Riley Simser on December 23, 1997; and her sister, Walda Marquette on December 24, 1989.
Friends may call Tuesday 2-6 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be held privately at Pine Grove Cemetery, Area 2, Massena.
