A funeral service for 94-year-old Mrs. Irene Gilson Forbes of Massena, and formerly of Potsdam, will be held on Wednesday, November 29th at noon at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, the 28th from 4-7 pm at the Garner Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam.
Contributions in her memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. Mrs. Forbes passed away on November 23rd at the Massena Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are three daughters and their husbands. David and Gloria Grevenhurst of Ontario, Canada; Lee and Mary Thievierge of Canton, NY and Douglas and Margaret Watt of Canton, GA; daughter in law Susan Gilson; step children Allan Forbes of Whiteboro, NY; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her son Douglas Gilson, her brother Donald Russell, her first husband Floyd Gilson and second husband Lawrence Forbes and a step daughter Shirley Premo.
She was born April 29, 1923 a daughter of Earl and Vera Russell. She attended Potsdam schools and graduated from Potsdam Central High School in 1940. She married Floyd E. Gilson of Potsdam on August 20, 1943. He was chief of police in Potsdam until 1960 when he retired due to his health. He died January 4, 1962. On December 1, 1967 she married Lawrence Forbes of Potsdam. He was a supervisor at Nekoosa Edwards Paper Mill for many years. He passed away in 1986.
Irene retired from New York Telephone Company from the Syracuse, NY office with over 20 years of service. She worked in the traffic department and retired from the accounting department. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling and crocheting hats for the newborn babies at local hospitals, reading and enjoying her family and friends.
