Mr. Herschel D. Evans, age 91, of Potsdam, passed away on June 16 at his camp on Cranberry Lake. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service, Potsdam. There will be a private service held for family members in his memory.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jean Dorothy Evans; daughter Patricia Betti and her husband Jim of Rye, New Hampshire, daughter Pamela Sharlow and her husband Ben of Parishville, and son William Evans and his wife Becky of Colton. Additionally, he leaves behind five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Herschel was born on February 1, 1919 in Utica, to Evan M. Evans and Alma Edwards. He graduated from Potsdam High School before choosing to attend Clarkson University, from which he graduated in 1941.
Due to his outstanding athletic accomplishments, Evans was named a member of the Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame.
After graduating from Clarkson, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Herschel was co-owner of the Evans and White Hardware store where he worked from 1946 until the present.
Those wishing to remember Mr. Evans may consider making a donation to the "Supporting Aaron Howell Fund." Aaron is a local Marine who was seriously injured recently while serving in Afghanistan. Donations may be sent care of the Norfolk Wesleyan Church, Norfolk.
