Helen M. Gaines, 106, Louisville, and formerly of Potsdam, passed away at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Thursday, Nov. 29. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Donald Manfred celebrant. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Helen is survived by her son William (Eunice) Gaines of Potsdam; daughters Marie LaVean of Massena and Marjorie Scott of Louisville; 16 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband Harold “Sparky” Gaines; a daughter Eleanor Gaines Rolf; 6 sisters; 5 brothers, son in laws Donald LaVean and John “Jack” Scott as well as two grandchildren James Rolf and Lisa LaVean Habgood .
Helen M. Gaines was born June 19, 1906 in Rensselaer Falls to Joseph O’Brien and Cecilia Hand. She attended rural schools in the Heuvelton area.
On August 20, 1928 at St. Rapheal’s Church in Heuvelton she was married to Harold W. “Sparky” Gaines. They lived in Potsdam and wintered in Bradenton, Florida. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam and St. Lawrence Church in Louisville. Helen was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Potsdam Town and Country Club. She enjoyed playing golf, entertaining guests and spending time with her family.
