Helen G. Salmon Canough, 84, formerly of 15 Claremont Avenue, passed away Monday morning, July 8, 2013, at the James Square Nursing Home, Syracuse, where she had been a patient. For the past three years she was a resident at the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena.
Helen was born on December 14, 1928, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Harold and Margaret Campbell Salmon. She attended school in Aultsville, Ontario. On June 26, 1948, she married Harry E. Canough, in Ingleside, Ontario. He predeceased her on March 24, 1989. Helen worked for years in the Massena Central Schools system in the cafeteria. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Massena, and was a member of the Ladies of the Elks and The Massena Home Bureau.
Helen is survived by her son, Laurie and Amy of Mexico; a daughter, Kathy and Peter Conese, of Liverpool; eight grandchildren, Michael, Kathleen, Jeffrey, Courtney, Bryanna, Ashley, Zachary, and Tennille; her sister, Ruth Shaver of Prescott, Ont; along with many nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by five brothers, Jim, Jack, Reg, Lorne, and Ken; and one sister, Florence.
Friends may call Thursday, July 11, 6-8 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held Friday, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Heather Stierheim, officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena.
