Hazel M. Carr, 83, of Gouverneur died on the 16th of October, 2012 at the Kinney Nursing Home where she resided since March 2008. She was cared for by her loving husband, Howard James Carr, at home for 13 years after suffering from a stroke on November 11, 1995.
Hazel was born August 21,1929 in Gouverneur, the daughter of the late Evan and Margaret Griffis. Hazel was salutatorian of the GHS class of 1947 and graduated from CCBI in 1948. Hazel married Howard Carr on February 27, 1949 and resided on Hailesboro Street for 7 years. In 1957, they purchased the Thompson Homestead Farm.
Her work history included Fullington Studebakers, Loomis Talc Co., Watertown Mattress Co., the Tribune Press, BOCES Special Education Center at Balmat, and St. Lawrence County Public Health then retired in 1991.
Hazel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include her spouse of 63 years, Howard Carr; four children, William and Anita Carr of Trout Lake, David and Karen Carr of Watertown, Stephen and Debra Carr Premo of Greenville, NC and John and Diane Carr Shippee of Gouverneur; and 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Dean Griffis; and a sister, Mary Bracy.
The family is very appreciative of the great care provided from the Kinney Nursing Home staff and a special thanks for the comfort provided during her final hours.
Honoring Hazel's wishes, a private burial will be held with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
