Funeral mass for Francis L. Butler Jr; 74, of Canton will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 12:00 noon at St. Mary’s Church in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia, Celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Mr. Butler passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010. Contributions in his memory may be made to the National Rifle Association, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
Surviving Francis are his wife of 54 years, Gail; six sons, Matthew and wife Sonya of Morley, Patrick and wife Tamar of Canton, Lawrence and wife Dawn of Potsdam, Shawn and wife Erica of Raleigh, NC, Robert and wife Becky of Russell, and Danny and wife Carrie of Syracuse; six daughters, Dee Adele Maroney of Canton, Colleen Larson and husband Steve of Tucson, AZ, Judy Butler-Daggett and husband Larry of Potsdam, Karen Butler of Canton, Erin Owney and husband Tom of Potsdam, and Kerri Butler-Kelly and husband Brian of Long Island; a brother, Robert and wife Nancy of Canton; two sisters, Joan Cutway of Ogdensburg and Kathleen Amo and husband Dave of Canton; and 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A son, Michael Francis Butler, predeceased him in 1964.
Francis was born April 15, 1936 in Canton, son of the late Francis Sr. and Mary (Ragan) Butler. He graduated from Canton High School in 1955. On May 12, 1956 he married Gail Matthews at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg with Msgr. George Whitaker, celebrating. He was employed by Edson Martin, ran a farm on Miner Street Road, delivered feed for Cash Coal and worked as a carpenter for the Carpenters Union, Local 271 of Watertown for 27years.
Mr. Butler enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, tractor pulls and was a member of the NRA.
