Funeral services for Francis Haas Musselman, age 87, of Oak Point, Hammond will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 tentatively at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cyril’s Church in Alexandria Bay with Rev. Comstock officiating. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday at Frary Funeral Home from 2 - 5 p.m. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Rossie, N.Y following the mass. Mr. Musselman passed away on April 3, 2013 at Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.
Among his survivors are his daughters, Martha Christina Musselman Sheridan, Kathryn Ann Musselman Bourbonniere, Carol Elizabeth Musselman Kuntz; his son, John Francis, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Musselman was born on August 3, 1925 in Utica, New York, the son of John Joseph and Kathryn Agnes (Haas) Musselman. He married Marjorie Louise Balme on June 22, 1948. She predeceased him in 2004. In 1950, Francis earned an A.B. from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York; in 1953 he earned a J.D. from Columbia University; and in 1994 he earned an L.H.D. (Hon.) from Wadhams Hall Seminary College. Francis was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2005 from his alma mater Hamilton College.
His career started in 1953 as an associate with the law firm, Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, in New York City. In 1960, he became a partner and former managing partner of that firm until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Musselman founded the Firm’s Washington D.C. office in 1980 and was widely recognized as a leading specialist in bankruptcy law and corporate reorganization. Frank was known for making tough decisions and his sound judgment and inspired many with his integrity. He was President and Director of Panfield Corp., in New York City from 1961-1982; Director of Panfield Nurseries from 1961-1982 and a law firm management consultant from 1991 until his death. He was also a bankruptcy trustee for Finley, Kumble et al, 1988 to 1993. During his career Mr. Musselman received the following certifications: Bar: New York 1954, D.D. 1980; U.S. District Court (So. District) New York 1956, U.S. Court of Appeals (D.C. Cir.) 1981, U.S. Supreme Court 1981.
Mr. Musselman was a Board Director of the Milbank Memorial Fund from 1960-1994 and Chairman from 1985-1990; Board Director of Memton Fund from 1958-1990; Trustee of Kirkland College, Clinton from 1971-1978, Chairman from 1972-1978; Board Director for National Center for Automated Information Retrieval from 1979-1980; Board Director for Hamilton College from 1978-1991, becoming a life member in 1991; Board Director of Barnard College from 1979-1981; Board Director of Mater Dei College from 1991 – xx; Chairman of Mater Dei College Foundtain from 1993-1995; Trustee Emeritus of Wadhams Halls Seminary College and Vice Chairman from m1979-1990; and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946.
His many memberships included; Fellow Am. Bar Foundation, New York State Bar Foundation, Am. College Law Practice Management; member Am. Judicature Society, Am. Law Institute, International Am., Federal Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, D.C. Bar Association, Association of Bar of City of New York , St. Lawrence County Bar Association, World Trade Club (New York City), Union League (New York City), Capitol Hill Club (Washington), Coram Nobis (New York City), Phi Delta Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha. Clubs: World Trade (New York City), Union League (New York City); Capitol Hill (Washington), Coram Nobis (New York City).
Francis had many hobbies some of which were the opera and reading.
