Francis E. “Frank” Thomas, age 88, passed away on August 13, 2010 at home in the presence of his family in Colton.
Born January 15, 1922 in Harrisville, son of Bert and Mamie Thomas, he is survived by his wife of 67 years, Norma Jebo Thomas; five children, daughters Lynn and husband Richard Coyne, Croton-on-Hudson, Denise and her husband John Shumway, Colton and sons: Curtis Thomas of Haslet, TX, Brandon and wife Susan Thomas, Kissimmee, FL, Dartrey and wife Kirn Thomas of Hyde Park; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving him is one sister, Gertrude and her husband Michael Amrich, Davie, FL.
He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Ethel Baxter, Marion Nagy and one brother, Dei Thomas.
Frank graduated from Potsdam High School, after which he served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 39 months, most of that time in the European Theater. After the war he graduated from the Veterans Vocational School in Troy, NY and then entered the New York State University program for vocational teachers, receiving his teaching certificate and then taught at Saunders Trade and Technical High School in Yonkers, NY for 29 years.
His passion was always automobiles, old and new. He was a life time member of The Society and Automotive Engineers and The Antique Automobile Club of America and spent many years as President of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass celebrated by Msgr. Robert Aucoin will be held Wednesday, August 18, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colton followed by a reception in the church Parish Hall. All are welcome. Burial will be August 19 in Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam.
