Graveside services for Eugene Oberg, age 92, of Ogdensburg will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 24, 2013 at Pine Hill Cemetery in Eel Weir with Pastor David Piatt officiating. Mr. Oberg passed away on Tuesday morning (Aug 6, 2013) at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. There will be no calling hours.
Surviving are his children, Harold Oberg & his wife Millie of GA; Bonnie Hinson and her husband Thomas of SC; grandchildren Debbie Kirby, Brendan and Mindy Oberg, Daniel Oberg, and Jamie Buckland and her husband David; great-grandchildren Luna Kirby, Alexis Fennessey, Erin Fennessey, Emily Christiansen, Abbeigh, Amelia, and Amberly and Anne Claire Oberg and Brandon and Peyton Buckland; great-great grandchildren Emily Marsh, Lauren and Kailyn Christiansen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lottie, and eight siblings.
Gene was born on Sept 18, 1920 in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late August & Rosa Lena (Eishweiler) Oberg. He attended schools in Cleveland, OH and entered the US Army during July of 1944 after marrying Lottie J. Bice on March 3, 1944 in Ogdensburg.
During his career he was employed as a bowling alley mechanic, self employed snow removal contractor, a general contractor on the St. Lawrence Seaway, a mason apprentice at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, a boat mechanic on the Great Lakes and then a mechanic for the NYS Dept of Transportation where he retired from in the late 90’s.
He was a member of the VFW and earned "man of the year" in 2002. He was also active with the Acacian Masonic Lodge in Ogdensburg. Gene enjoyed bowling, attending his grandchildren’s events and being a life time donor to local blood drives.
