GOUVERNEUR – Emerson Brown, 93, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Country Manor Nursing Home in Carthage.
A funeral service will be held Monday November 18th at 1:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Karen Taylor, pastor of the United Church of Richville officiating and burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville. Calling hours are Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and Monday from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.
Emerson was born January 3, 1920 in Gouverneur, the son of Earl and Ethel Laidlaw Brown.
He married Margaret Pike on June 28, 1938 in Heuvelton with Rev. R.B. Hewitt officiating. Margaret passed away December 26, 1990.
Emerson operated a dairy farm on the Phelps/Cole Road, near Richville, for over 60 years, starting in 1939. He truly enjoyed working the land, caring for the animals, and spending time with the family on the farm. Emerson served as a salesman for Dekalb Seed Company and once earned a trip to Hawaii for his sales. He and his family also operated Brown’s Sugarbush from 1952 to 1989.
Emerson enjoyed playing bingo and cards, camping, gardening, snowmobiling, and driving around his Deutz tractor. He also enjoyed spending winters in Florida and traveling, having once enjoyed a cross country trip to California.
Emerson is survived by his companion Edith Matthie, two sons Alfred and Linda (Keyes) Brown of Gouverneur, Robert J. and Linda (Yerdon) Brown of Gouverneur, a daughter Dorothy Dana of Canton, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Carlton Brown of Jupiter, FL, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife.
