SOMERIVLLE -- Elizabeth J. "Lib" Lee Swem, 95, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Carthage Area Hospital.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, November 27th at 1:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Shane Lynch officiating and spring burial in New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Elizabeth was born in Rossie on January 14, 1922, the daughter of William and Susan Smith Lee.

Upon attending the Rapid School in Rossie and graduating from Gouverneur High School in 1941, Elizabeth married, began raising her family, worked at the lace mill, Kinney's soda fountain, Carbone's Shoe Store, Kaplan's Department Store, and served on the Republican Committee of St. Lawrence County.

She attended St. James Church where she volunteered as a religious education teacher and called bingo, was a 60 year member of the Natural Dam birthday club, was a Brownie leader, enjoyed traveling with Pat, knitting, crocheting, reading, dancing, and was known for her baking powder biscuits. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially at her camp at Pleasant Lake.

She married Alva C. "Pat" Swem on August 17, 1946 in Aberdeen, Maryland. Mr. Swem, a retired superintendent at James River Corporation, passed away on January 4, 2002. Elizabeth was previously married to Ernest Frappier.

Elizabeth is survived by three sons, James Frappier of Virginia, Richard and Paula Frappier of Herkimer, and Ronnie Swem of Antwerp and his companion Judy Bush; five daughters, Nancy and Kerry Bickford of Oswegatchie, Judy and Gerald Fairbanks of Colorado, Marcalene and David Blair of Gouverneur, Marilyn and Joseph Poplawski of California, and Carolyn and Randy Constance of Gouverneur; and 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. She is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Jones of Kansas, and Joyce Lee Aldridge of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Alva; a daughter, Susan Swem; a brother, William Lee; and two grandchildren, Melissa Bickford and Adam Frappier.
