Elizabeth “Betty” J. Sweeney, 81 of Douglas Rd. Massena passed away Saturday afternoon April 27, 2013 at Massena Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Scott D. Fobare presiding. Family and friends are welcome to call Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home.
Betty is survived by her children, Jude A. Francis and Stephen and Norma Francis of Massena; two stepdaughters, Cindie and Tom Cringle of Massena and Sue and Dewey Kimieciak of Boyd WI; grandchildren, Corey Francis and Krista Cecot, Chad Francis, Lindsay and Jim MacDonald, Tiffany Maynard, Christopher and Terri Maynard, all of Massena and Todd and Amanda Parkinson of Eau Claire, WI; great-grandchildren Kyla Cecot, Dylan Francis, Cameron and Karlee Francis, Breydon and Jacob MacDonald, Ethan W. Shatraw. Codie Maynard, Jack Radel, David and Austin Yeddo and Landon Maynard, all of Massena,
Also surviving Betty are her nephews, Duane and Janice O’Brien of Florida, Colin O’Brien of Massena, David Shatraw of Florida, James and Angela Shatraw of Massena and niece Christine and Mark Ronzoni of Colorado.
Betty was born in Ogdensburg to the late Howard and Maria Muscot on December 2, 1931. She attended Massena schools, graduating with the Class of 1950. She married Stanley M. Francis on June 20, 1951 at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Stanley preceded Betty on March 7, 1961. She married William R. Sweeney on March 16, 1985. He predeceased her on March 18, 1997. She was also predeceased by a daughter in infancy, Trudy Ann Francis; a sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia and Henry Paradise; a brother in-law, Paul O’Brien; one of her best friends, Ms. Merilyn Radel and her loving cat, Simba.
Betty worked for over twenty years at the Massena Agway store, retiring in 1986. She enjoyed spending time in her garden, knitting, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching deer on Barnhart Island and mostly spending time with her loved ones.
