Dr. Alexander Earl Dodds, age 87, passed away on August 12, 2010 at home, in the care of his loving family, devoted caregivers, and Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, with special thanks to the Potsdam team.
Dr. Dodds was born on July 15, 1923 in Gouverneur, to George Wilson and Jane Laidlaw Dodds. He graduated from Gouverneur Central School and attended St. Lawrence University. He earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester Medical School in 1948. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was honorably discharged.He married Dorothy Anne Mundy on September 18, 1950 at the Potsdam United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Edwards and Wimberley, TX.
He practiced medicine from his home and served as St. Lawrence County Coroner for over 50 years. He was the physician for the local zinc and talc mining companies.
Dr. Dodds was a member of the Edwards Masonic Lodge, the Edwards United Methodist Church, the American Medical Association, and the Pine Tree Hunting Club. He served on the Edwards School Board for many years. He enjoyed singing and hunting, and was an Eagle Scout.
Dr. Dodds is survived by his wife Dorothy of Edwards; his five children, Jane, of Lima, Kathleen, of Portland OR, Dr. George, of Cooperstown, Julia, of Anchorage AK, Martha, of Driftwood TX; twelve grandchildren, Shannon, Alexander, Brad, Owen, Elizabeth, Julia, George, Roger, Dodds Colton, Wilson, Anna and Dorothy; a brother-in-law, James Kraker of Sylvia Lake and two nephews, Larry and Sandy Kraker. He is predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Kraker and his niece, Althea Dodds Kraker.
Calling hours will be Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 1 - 3 and 6 - 8 p.m. at French Funeral Home , 16 Barnes St., Gouverneur. The funeral will be Monday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gouverneur Presbyterian Church with Reverands Richard Mayforth and William Hart officiating. There will be a Masonic service at the church to begin the funeral service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.
