Donald S. “Don” Poor, 70, Rensselaer Falls

Donald S. “Don” Poor, 70, of Mayhew Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012 at his home.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. and on Friday from 1-2 p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Funeral will be Friday at 2:15 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton.

He was born on June 16, 1942, in the family home, in the Town of DePeyster. He was a son of the late Walter E. and Margaret J. (Rayburn) Poor. He was a 1960 graduate of Heuvelton Ctrl School, where he was involved in the F.F.A. He was also a member of the 4-H in DePeyster.

On May 29, 1963, he married Caroll Ann Conant in Oswego County. Caroll died in January 2006.

Don owned and operated the multi-generational family farm with the help of his wife and children, when he took ownership from his father in 1972.

He enjoyed antique cars, old tractors, a number of Black Labs named “Ted” and socializing with friends and neighbors over coffee at the farm.

Don is survived by his son, Frank of Rensselaer Falls; three daughters, Laurie Poor and boyfriend David Witherhead of Canton, Diane Gentles and husband Scott of Saylorsburg, PA and Carla Flood and husband Dustin of Nunda; one sister, Bethany Nelson and husband Edward of Lisbon; two granddaughters, Kirsten and Kailee Gentles; four step-grandchildren, Jessica, Kathleen, Michael and Allison Witherhead; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Carl and Millard.
