Donald “Red” Storie, 78, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Beth Benham, pastor of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church officiating and burial in East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at Nina’s Hotel after the graveside service. Calling hours are Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Donald was born May 4, 1934 in Gouverneur, the son of Prentice and Bertha Wallace Storie. Red attended Gouverneur schools. After marrying, Red moved to Buffalo where he worked at the Ford plant. Upon his return to Gouverneur, he owned and operated two dairy farms for 13 years. He also worked for White’s Lumber Company and then drove truck for 30 years until retirement. The most important part of his life was spending time with his family. Red lived life with the ability to laugh and make others laugh through his unique sense of humor. Red enjoyed time spent in his garden and gambling, especially slot machines and lottery tickets.
Red is survived by his wife, Gladys of Syracuse; his seven children, Laurie Scott and companion Ed Noble of Gouverneur, Larry and Shelly Storie of Cape Vincent, Linda Storie and companion Carl Duncan of North Carolina, Lloyd and Jerrilyn Storie of Gouverneur, Lorraine and David Fuller of Weavertown, Leon “Boomer” and Laurie Storie of Alabama, and Liza Zellweger of Syracuse; 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three siblings, Dorothy Robinson of Ohio, Lauris Coffey of Canton, and Milton Storie of Gouverneur; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad or American Cancer Society.
