Donald E. McCormick Sr., 79, Massena

Mr. Donald E. McCormick, Sr., 79, of Nightengale Ave, passed away Tuesday evening, April 23, 2013 after a lengthy illness at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since February 27th.

Don was born August 10, 1933 in Canton, the son of the late Ronald and Helen Potter McCormick. He graduated from Canton Central School at the age of 17. After graduation, he was drafted into the US Army, where he served in Korea and was a Military Police Officer at Fort Benning in Augusta, Georgia. He was honorably discharged on March 16, 1955. On February 24, 1961, he married Shirley M. Pelkey in White River Junction, Vermont.

Don was a pot tender in the remelt department at Alcoa for 44 ½ years until his retirement. He was also a Shop Stewart for the union for many years and was instrumental in establishing unions in other plants. After his retirement from Alcoa, Don became a crossing guard at Jefferson School and delivered flowers for the Downtown Florist. Don was very active in community affairs, having been a member of the Massena Housing Authority Board and the Massena Rescue Squad having been the President for 10 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 79, the National Rifle Association, and the Massena Senior Citizens, where he also served as president at one time. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, doing crossword puzzles, and playing solitaire. Don also enjoyed Thursday breakfasts with his Alcoa buddies, socializing with his many friends, and spending time with his many family, especially his grandchildren.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, Donald Jr. and Kelley McCormick of Naples, Florida; his daughter, Shelley and Mike Carroll of Massena; his stepson, Daryl and Gina LaClair of Manassas, VA; six grandchildren, Donald E. McCormick III, Steven M. McCormick, Matthew LaClair, Matthew Carroll, Katie LaClair, and Mikaela Carroll; two great grandchildren, Torin and Kaeli McCormick; his brother, Dahl and Elta McCormick of Potsdam; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by parents and many aunts and uncles.

Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m. with Deacon Tom Proulx, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
