GOUVERNEUR – Donald E. Chilton, 88, of Gouverneur and St. Petersburg, Fla., passed away on July 24, 2010 in Land O’Lakes, Fla.
There will be a graveside service on Aug. 28 at the East Riverside Cemetery at 11 a.m. followed by a remembrance reception.
Surviving are seven children; William (Cindy), Clearwater, Fla.; Jerre, (Carol White) Amsterdam, N.Y.; Donna (Gary) Briscoe, Gouverneur, Judie (Martin) Hassett, Richville; Bernard (Valerie), Port Richey, Fla.; Pamela Easton, (Brian Marsh) Fowler, and Dean, Gouverneur. There are 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, 4 nephews and 2 nieces.
He was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.
He was born in Watertown on June 30, 1922, the son of Harry and Mary Cramer Chilton. He attended schools in Watertown, Lowville, and Gouverneur.
He married Virginia J. Hosmer of Gouverneur on July 1, 1942. She passed away in 1977.
He worked for the New York Airbrake before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII, including the Philippines, and was discharged in December 1945.
He worked as a millwright and welder for various companies, and worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Interstate 81 construction projects. He retired from Farley Roofing in 1987.
He spent the summer months in the North Country and wintered in St. Petersburg.
