Cynthia Kay Cubley, 60, Potsdam, died Feb. 4 at Unity Medical Center in Rochester.

Cynthia was born to Howard Barrett and Betty Barrett Wilcox on May 06, 1953, in Malone. She graduated from Franklin Academy in 1970, and then attended SUNY Plattsburgh, where she received a B.A. in history (1974) and met her future husband, the late David Cubley of Potsdam. She received a M.A. in Library Science from SUNY Geneseo in 1976. Cindy and David were married in the summer of 1976.

Cynthia began her long teaching career in Sandy, Oregon, before moving back to New York and holding a number of library positions in the Ticonderoga and Norwood-Norfolk school districts in the late 1970s. She started teaching at Canton Central School in the early 1980s, and remained there until her recent retirement in June 2013. A passionate educator throughout her career, Cindy was a committed advocate for reading.

Cynthia is survived by two children: Joel Cubley of Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada; and Erin Cubley of Spokane, WA; her mother Betty Wilcox, Malone; sister Susan Barrett, Rochester; brother Michael Barrett, Bozeman, MT, and brother Thomas Barrett, Plattsburgh. She was predeceased by a brother, Joel Barrett, in 1976. Above all, Cindy loved her family.

A public celebration of Cynthia’s life will be held Saturday at 3 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the American Cancer Society.
