Claude Webster Merithew, 101, DeKalb Junction

Claude Webster Merithew, 101, of US Hwy 11, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his home with his loving family around him.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:15 a.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Hospice Chaplain Robert Schirmer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery.

He was born on July 21, 1911 in a log cabin in Frog Hollow (Town of Hermon) to Webster and Artabelle (Goodale) Merithew. He attended DeKalb High School until the 12th Grade, leaving to find work to assist the family. On May 16, 1935, he married Ida Elizabeth Stacey in West Hermon. Ida died in January of 2000.

At a young age, Claude’s first job was selling bagged popcorn to train passengers in DeKalb Jct. After high school he worked as a self-employed dairy farmer, renting and running farms in Perch River, Gouverneur, Hermon and DeKalb. He retired from farming in 1973. Claude also sold machinery for Art Robinson, did carpentry and handyman work for people and worked at Carvel’s Hardware. Later in life he became an accomplished woodworker and craftsman.

Surviving are his children, Doris and James H. Smith of Russell, Geraldine and Richard Fletcher of Colton, Richard and Clarise of S. Colton, Robert and Shirley of Canton and Paul and Jean of DeKalb Junction; and a daughter-in-law, Katherine of Florida. He will also be fondly remembered by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Claude was predeceased by a son, Harley (2012); two sisters, Inez Whitmore and Doris Sweeney; and a grandson, James Smith, Jr.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or to the DeKalb Fire Department.
