Charles L. Stowell, 93, Gouverneur, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Kinney Nursing Home, Gouverneur.
The funeral service will be held Monday, February 4 at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with Rev. Beth Benham, pastor of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oxbow Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 and 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
Charles was born July 26, 1919 in Gouverneur, the son of Charles W. and Ella Thompson Stowell.
Charles attended Gouverneur schools and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 until 1946.
He was employed at Central Garage, worked on the railroad, and was employed at St. Joe Minerals over 30 years, retiring in August of 1984. Charles resided at 52 Smith St. all his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Charles was married to Verna Mary Hunter and Shirley Mae Arnold.
Charles is survived by children Carlton Stowell, Alton and Vicky Stowell, Mary Marcellus, and Lynn and Lorraine Stowell, all of Gouverneur; two stepchildren, Linda and Richard Shirley of Elmdale, and Kenneth and Edie Stowell of Massena; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley; his parents; three brothers, Melvin, Maynard, and Wallace Stowell; and two sisters, Ethel Finley and Lena Storie.
